This has been a year full of adjustments, changes, and realigning both my personal and professional goals. One of my goals this year is to find ways to save money on unnecessary expenses and spend more on things that make me happy.It's not always an easy swap, especially when it comes to technology: I can do without cable, but I can't live without a cell phone.
Living in Los Angeles and dependent on technology, cell phone bills are a small price to pay to stay connected. But then I did the math:
My cell phone bill is $100 per month. My hubby's bill is also $100 a month. (We don't use the same cell phone carrier)
We spend more than $2,400 a year on our cell phone bills per year - on the LOW end - if we do not go over our minutes!
This is CRAZINESS!
As much as I want to save money, low-end wireless plans don't seem to be worth the pain and hassle of a switch when it's only amounts to a $10 monthly savings.
Then I found out about the Walmart Family Mobile / #FamilyMobileSaves wireless plan. Starting at only $24.88 per month, it seemed too good to be true.
First I did a little e-shopping to find out what I needed to save money on my monthly bill (Do realize that every single "doubt" bone in my body was reacting). There had to be a catch, right?
Well, yes. Only one: In order to save money on my monthly bill, I had to buy a starter kit for $25. This "starter kit" includes a SIM card that you can use in your existing phone or in a new Walmart Family Mobile phone.
Yes, you read this right: You can use your existing phone - including your iPhone! (Angels in heaven rejoice!)
Now, being that I am a clumsy fool, I happened to break my iPhone only two days before I headed to Walmart to learn more about this monthly wireless plan; so, I was also in the market for a new phone. (yes, yes, I know - it's a story for another day).
Since I didn't know which cell phone I wanted, the salesperson recommended the Concord, which is a great starter Smartphone or second phone; AND, it's also on sale for $79.88 (not a typo!).
The salesperson also sold me the Starter Kit (the only extra you will need), and was kind enough to give me the option to set-up my new phone at the store. Since I didn't want to display my utter lack of patience in front of total strangers, I decided to activate my phone at home.
The entire process took less than 10 minutes - and my phone was working in less than one hour!
My bill (get ready to FAINT) will now only be $39.99 + tax - for UNLIMITED talk, text and web. A monthly savings of $60!
I will have more than $700 in my hot little hands ready to be applied to something more sensible...and when my hubby switches over, we will save more than $1,400 per year!!
