I'll never forget what happened to Jon & I one night last winter....
We were out in Exeter, we'd been doing an appearance at a childrens party (which is the business I run in my spare time) in an area of the city we were unfamiliar with.
The party had finished at 6.30 and we'd stopped on the way home to get a bite to eat, so it was around 8pm and already dark by the time we were trying to find our way back home....
We took a wrong turn somewhere, and before we knew it we were driving around the exact sorts of roads I hate even in broad daylight - long, windy country roads up hillsides with sheer drops at the roadside - terrifying in the pitch black!
Nobody in sight to ask for directions, no houses or pubs around, no streetlights - it felt so desolate.
I was feeling nervous enough about the situation and I knew we were low on petrol which was worrying me even more, but then all of a sudden something happened to the engine and we jerked to a sudden halt.
I have no clue about anything to do with cars, and I'm sorry to say that Jon isn't much better....
Neither of us had any idea what was wrong, we didn't have a torch with us, Jon had no calling credit on his phone and my phone battery had died at the party....
We were basically stuck in the middle of nowhere....
Oh and one thing I should have mentioned....I was 7 months pregnant at the time!!
I was completely terrified and hysterical ... Jon was trying to keep me calm but all I could envision were scenes from countless horror movies about people being accosted in these exact situations....and even if those thoughts didn't come true, at the very least we could be stranded there all night or freeze to death trying to walk for help in the Icy conditions outside!
Luckily for us, we were only stranded there wondering what to do for about 20 minutes when a car drove past - at first we thought they'd just gone past us but they came back and the nice man inside was much more sensible and was equipped with a flashlight and jump leads!!
He gave us a jump start ... along with a lecture about how he had worked for years for the AA and we needed to go straight home and sign up for AA breakdown cover... and make sure we bought ourselves some basic things to keep in the car such as a torch!!
The experience may have ended well for us but it scared the life out of me, and of course I made sure that from then on we had breakdown cover (and I bought a sat nav system right away too!)
We travel up and down the country a lot on regular trips home to Liverpool and on holidays like our recent one to Cornwall so its especially important as I dread to think about being stranded on a motorway somewhere with Tyne!
