The Mission, Part 1

Posted on the 16 April 2014 by Bren Lee @JustBrenLee

Duane handed each of them a package. They were on a new mission.  Inside the packets were the details of the mission they were to complete.

“Your mission and all necessary details are inside these packets. Take the remainder of the day to review them and we’ll convene back here at 1600. You’ll leave for your missions at 0700 tomorrow.” Duane said.

Dreading what was inside the packet, Brit quickly opened it and began reading.

“This is not good” she thought to her self. “I need to find a way to get out of this and stat!”

She looked over at Thad and Marcus who were already amped up about the mission. They thrived on action and adventure. Thad was a retired Navy Seal and excelled at ever challenge placed in front of him. Marcus, the shorter of the two, was previously a bodyguard for the President of the United States. Neither of them had family to speak of and enjoyed romping around with different women when the need arose.

Brit on the other hand, was ready to settle down. She had been looking for a way to get out of the field yet was unsure how to go about it. She knew it was finally time and she would have to make her move.

The three of them went their separate ways to read about their new mission. Each of them had suites at the mansion and could come and go as they pleased. The suites were like miniature condo’s decorated according to their tastes and had every accommodation they needed. Everything was given to them in return for their loyalty to the organization.

Brit got back to her room and instantly started thinking of the best way to leave the organization.

“Should I just come right out and tell Duane?”

“Should I beg forgiveness and just say I’m done?”

She pondered long and hard about how she could get out. She didn’t even read more about the mission because she was determined to not go and fulfill her obligation.

“I’ve got it!” she thought to herself.

As quick as she said it, she began stripping down and headed to shower. While in the shower, her brain was churning. She knew exactly what had to be done and just how to do it, yet she knew deep down, it wasn’t a sure thing.

After primping for over and hour, she slipped into some clean clothes, grabbed her mission packet and headed downstairs to convene with the boys. Not only was there a great mission at hand, but Brit had her very own private mission as well.

“I’m assuming you’ve read over your packets and you know exactly what your missions are. Are there any questions?” Duane asked.

Thad and Marcus were still amped up and ready to begin the mission. “No sir” they yelled.

Duane looked over at Brit who was fidgeting in her seat.

“Is there a problem Brit?”

“No sir, but I would like to speak to you in private if I may.” she said.

“That can be arranged. Thad. Marcus. If the two of you don’t have any questions, you’re dismissed until 0700 tomorrow. Make sure to have all your things together and be ready to start the mission.”

“Yes sir” they both said and slowly walked out of the room.

On the way out, Thad had glared over at Brit who was still fidgeting around. He knew something was up and just didn’t know what. Marcus, coming up behind Thad, pushed him along and said “Come on chump. Just let it go. Let’s go into town and get some brews.”

Sounded like a good idea so off Thad and Marcus went.

Knowing that there were now alone, Brit felt more comfortable in speaking with Duane about her departure from the organization.

“We’re alone now. So what is so important that you need to speak to me in private?” he asked.

She got up out of her seat and headed to over to where Duane was standing.

“Let’s sit down” pointing to the leather couch next to her.

Her palms were sweating and she was so nervous but she knew, she had to do it. This was her mission, her last mission, that she set out to accomplish.

Before Duane sat down, he grabbed a glass of brandy.

“Would you like some? he asked

Knowing it would calm her down a bit, she gladly accepted his offer.“Yes, thank you, I would love that!”

There we both sitting on the couch now, Duane in a relaxed position and Brit a bit tense and nervous still.

“So what’s going on Brit? You seem different? Nervous? Is it the mission?

“Duane, you know that I have been loyal to the organization and you for many years now, but something just doesn’t seem right about this mission.” she said.

“Continue”

Pointing to her brandy glass “Um, could I get another please?”

He got up and refilled both their glasses, then decided to just bring the entire bottle and sit it on the table in front of them. He sat back down and lit up a cigarette and handed Brit her glass.

“Thank you” she says as she moves in a little closer to him ” I want out.”

“Out? Out of what?”

“Out of the field. I want a normal life. One without dangerous missions and pretending to be someone other than myself.” She puts her face in her hands as tears consume her.

She looks up with mascara now running down her face “I want………………………………….you.”
