The mob mentality
Be it mob lynching or violent protests, time has proved again and again how dangerous a mob can be. Yet, people keep on inciting it for their ulterior motives. The causes may be many, but the reason remains the same - when it's the choice between peace and profit, selfish people will always choose profit.
The effect of social media in inciting a mob
Social media should form connections between people. But now, powers use it to create divisions. They know that it takes only a spark to incite the mob. And social media can easily turn this spark into a raging fire. One tweet gone viral can create havoc on roads. One video circulating on free messaging apps can put life on hold.
Stop the abuse of social media
The only way we can stop this abuse of social media is by being a responsible citizen. Stop mindless forwarding of inciting, hateful content. Please, people, if something on the social media looks shocking and hurtful, google and verify its authenticity before forwarding it. Just copy its headline or some words, add the words 'fake' to it and google. It won't take long for you to know the truth.
How to check if the social media content is fake?
First of all, have a critical mindset. Go with the belief that if it is too surprising or shocking, it is probably fake or exaggerated. Never blindly trust and forward a hateful or hurtful message. Check out THIS ARTICLE to know more about how you can verify social media content.
If the content is related to Indian government departments/ministries/schemes, you can also get the news or content verified by the Press Information Bureau (@PIB_India). Just email its screenshot/url to [email protected]. They will check it and notify you of the result. But it won't be as fast as self-checking through Google.
Free yourself of the mob mentality
Free yourself of the mob mentality. Examine, analyze, disbelieve before you believe, and stop forwarding hate.
