Things I Wish I Had Learned as a Child

Happy New Year! Thank you for choosing Berry Nice as your entertainment for the next 5 minutes in this grand new year, I hope you walk away content, or just never leave.

One of my resolutions to help me combat my hatred of New Years is to fight pessimism. It’s ironic and stupid, but growing oneself is not meant to be intelligent.

So in scientific method, isolate the problem, give the problem alcohol, see where the night takes us, emotionally.

Things I wish I had learned as a child

1. I wish I had learned to play.

I wish I had learned to lose and cry, try and fail, work with others and mastered the art of slyly shifting blame. I wish I had learned to celebrate our differences as we work together to defeat other people. I wish I had learned to play in groups of equal people who were united against the game.

2. I wish I had learned to pray.

I wish I had learned to put faith in faith. To believe that there is always hope, and that there are things beyond the scope of our actions that can affect our lives. I wish I had learned to pray, to relieve myself of the burden of the human experience, and not make spirituality and self responsibility be in a constant custody battle for my soul and destiny.

3. I wish I had learned to commit

I wish I had learned to trust and give in, to clean up after myself because I may return. I wish I had learned to commit, to not leave when it did not work, to not run at the slightest trouble. I wish I had learned to stay, in a nice permanent way.

4. I wish I had learned to throw away things

I wish I had learned to discard broken things that were unusable. Caps of pens used in failed love letters, that toffee wrapper from when I wrote a review of a Tale of Two Cities In fifth grade and the teacher just had to give me a Dairy Milk Eclair. I wish I had learned to throw things away; frayed scarves and broken stationery that make me realize I’m pulling at straws to stay connected.

5. I wish I had learned to listen

I wish I had learned to listen. You wish I had learned to listen. They wish I had learned to listen. We all wish I had learned to listen.

Have a great year ahead! Until next time, keep singing.
