Fellow television fans, it was a bad week. This week saw the cancellation of not one, but four great shows. Making this tragedy even worse, they were all on the same network—ABC.
A network that I personally, had just started to forgive for cancelling my beloved “Pushing Daisies,” which is another subject for another day. For now, let’s focus on saying goodbye to the beloved characters we recently lost.
“Castle”
I have to admit, it’s been a while since I tuned into “Castle,” but when I watched it, this was one of my favorites. It also had a nice long run, which is nothing to sneeze at. However the drama over letting leading lady Stana Katic go that led up to the series cancellation leaves a depressingly dark pall over the whole event. “Castle,” you’ll be missed.
“The Muppets”
This one really stings, the return of the Muppets to primetime television was a big deal. They got off to a bumpy start, but after a midseason break, managed to completely turn the series around. It was truly impressive, and a nearly impossible feat that they pulled off. Sadly, they won’t be allowed to continue their glorious return. Congrats ABC, you killed the pure joy that is the Muppets.
“Galavant”
I never expected “Galavant,” to get a second season. It was too original, too different, and I loved every second of its glorious first mini-season. That’s a recipe for disaster. So when it was announced that there would be a second season, I thought it had to be an Internet hoax. When it was just as good, if not better, than the first season, well I started to hope that maybe just maybe ABC would give this little-show-that-could a shot. Sadly, a third season was not in the cards.
“Agent Carter”
I saved the most disappointing for last. Oh ABC, how could you? “Agent Carter,” was a breath of fresh air in a primetime lineup and Marvel universe overrun with male-dominated shows.
And stepping away from the gender-card, it was an amazing show. It was 100 times better than “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Plus it brought the Marvel movie magic to the small screen in a way that none of the other series have truly accomplished. It captures the feeling of the original “Captain America” film. And it showed that those in charge of telling the stories knew what audiences wanted and appreciated the fascinating character, Peggy Carter. She was an important part of not just ABC’s midseason lineup, but the current scripted television offerings as well. Here’s hoping that someone else appreciates just how important this show is, and it lives on in some shape or form.
