Weather Makes Me Sleepy.

Posted on the 16 April 2013 by Mikidemann @mikidemann
My life lately has been a mix of mac n' cheese, dog training and naps. Does anyone else find it really hard to stay awake when there is gloomy weather outside? I swear that every day I get home from work and I'm usually thinking about doing laundry or blogging, then I end up falling asleep. Rewind... when I get home from work, I get in my house and it's a bit chilly. Here in Utah you can't have the heater or the cooler on during spring. You're usually flipping back and forth between the two. Before bed I have the fan on with the AC, but when I get home from work I flip on the heater then I curl up in bed to watch Seinfeld. Jared claims this is where I go wrong (not the heater - crawling into bed).
Let me argue my point. It's extremely hard for me to wake up in the morning as is. I always struggle so much to open my eyes and then getting ready is just a mess of trying to jam contacts in my eyes that are still too tired to open fully and washing my face with cold water to wake up. When I get out the door for work it usually about 7:45am. That is so early for this baby bird. I head home at 5pm. At 5 it's still pretty early, right? That why I like to take a nice half hour or an hour nap. After my nap I feel so refreshed and then I am able to enjoy my night. Lately, my naps have not been a want, they have been a need! It's been snowy and dark here the last few weeks, which brings me back to my point. The gloomy weather makes it hard to stay awake. Not just after work but all day long!
Today I started to think if it was just mental or if my "mood" or sleepiness is something that is affected by the weather, because I've noticed other around me have the same outlook on gloomy weather days. It turns out that there are TONS of resources linking certain moods to different types of weather. I really enjoyed this article about mood and weather.
This excerpt is from webMD find it here.
  • Temperature, wind, and sunlight were found to have an effect on negative mood. Sunlight seemed to play a role on how tired people said they were.
  • Wind had more of a negative effect on mood in spring and summer than in fall and winter.
  • Sunlight had a mitigating effect on whether people reported they were tired on days when it rained.
So what do you think, is your mood affected by the weather??
