Wedding in Sherborne, Dorset – Before the Ceremony

Posted on the 01 September 2016 by Belinda Mccarthy @b_mccarthyphoto

It's time to take a closer look at another wedding in Sherborne, Dorset - and this time it's a visit to a wonderful wedding day I recently shot for a couple who married in the amazing space that is Sherborne Abbey and then held their couples' portraiture in the glorious surroundings of Sherborne School. What a day! But I'm getting ahead of myself a little, as this blog is to take a little look at their bridal preparation photography.

The bride lives in Sherborne, but as many do, decided to get ready at her family home, not far away in Yeovil, Somerset. As is the case for many weddings, getting ready 'at home' means a little organised chaos and working around the normal trappings of family life! However, it's a time that's uniquely special, for preparing for a wedding at the family home gives it special meaning for both the bride and the family, creating yet more unforgettable memories to cherish in the years to come.

As a wedding photographer, when you're working in a family home to photograph the bridal preparation, there's a fine balance between getting the shots and getting in the way - particularly as many bedrooms in modern houses aren't exactly designed with a huge amount of space to work in! That's where shooting through doorways becomes a photographer's best friend - and not only that, it gives you a documentary feel to the images, as you become clearly an observer rather than a participator to the event. Bridal preparation is chaotic, it's exciting, but it's also very personal and emotive, so it's crucial that the photographer doesn't intrude upon moments.

I love photographing weddings in my home county of Dorset - and this particular wedding was a tremendous event to be a part of and to document for the bride and groom. As you'll see in later blogs, Sherborne Abbey is a truly spectacular location - in fact, the whole of Sherborne is a pretty spectacular place to hold a wedding! I'm so lucky to have such a wonderful town just twenty minutes' drive from my door.

I do hope you like the images following - and see how photographing bridal prep in a tight space is entirely possible! If you're planning your wedding day and aren't sure about having the photographer attend the bridal prep in case it's obtrusive, then I hope you can see from these that it certainly doesn't have to be the case if you choose a discreet documentary style wedding photographer to capture your day.
