Some people still call it by its old name, and its nickname remains “The Combination,” however, the Northeastern State University Wellness Center remains the location on campus to allow students to obtain their exercise – plus it offers memberships to this community.

Even the facility, which reopened after an extensive renovation in 2016, offers services in addition. Are pin selector machines, free weights a rack and programs. Other indoor features include a jogging-walking monitor, basketball courts plus a swimming pool. There is also an onsite medical clinic.

“The purpose, obviously, is to give students the chance to come in and workout – get into a physical activity,” said Arron Edwards, that assumed the Wellness Center directorship in August. “We also manage intramural sports here.”

Exercise has advantages, and Edwards stated there is also a societal aspect. Patrons and intramurals are exercising or playing with friends.

Graduate student Mason Slayton is currently in her third season on the NSU Wellness Center staff.

“I chose to apply after I changed my major to wellness and human performance,” Slayton said. “I got the call the next day and started out doing group desk and fitness job, but got promoted to manager. That led to more floor work. Now that I’m a graduate assistant, I’m doing more applications and interacting with patrons.”

Edwards stated that the Pair is student-run, which employees are devoted to enhancing and maintaining the workout experience.

“There is just me and another full-time worker,” he said. “Apart from that, it is students. We provide jobs for students. They are front desk, lifeguards, the fitness floors run. It’s an opportunity to allow them when they’re ready to receive work, to get forward. They are going to have managed group classes, maintained done and equipment training.”

Slayton consented that she was obtaining experience in a work environment in addition.

“I want to stay in a gym-like setting,” she said. “I need to train, trainer, and maybe manage. I will be doing all this stuff later on, and it all correlates with my studies.”

Dr. Steve Turner, NSU president, also said that the center had continually exceeded the hopes of all on campus.

“This is a unique mixture of some state of the art workout facility with a large indoor swimming pool, an academic building and a wellness clinic,” Turner said. “The clinic provides a wide selection of health care options for our student, faculty, employees and the surrounding neighborhood. The Fit has become a hub of activity for all our students and has come to be the fitness resource for the area.”

Community memberships include group fitness classes and other services, and are $ 30 for individuals and $ 40 for families of any size. The university intramurals are shut into the neighborhood. Additionally, there are evening and passes.
