Why I Love Staying Back at My Hostel During Mid Semester Break

Posted on the 28 November 2015 by Kimeetay @Kimee_Tay

It’s been ages since I last posted something. My last post was about my finals last semester and now I’m a month away from my finals for this semester. So anyway my mid semester break ended 2 weeks ago and I’ve been wanting to write a post on why I love staying back at my hostel instead of going back home during the mid semester break. During the last mid semester break (the one that just passed), I stayed back for 5 days and went back home for the last 4 days.

When I tell people that I prefer to stay back during the mid semester break, I mostly get replies like “so weird”, “you not scared meh“, “stay back do what” etc. So here’s why I love staying back during semester break (in no particular order).

I get the whole room to myself.

This semester, I’m staying in a double room with a year 4 senior. Didn’t get the single room that I applied for but that’s a long story. So during the semester break, she went back for the whole week. Well in fact she goes back almost every other weekend too. Having the whole room to myself means I can open the door and window whenever I want to without worrying if it would bother her; I can change freely; I can switch the fan to whatever speed I like or turn the lights off and on whenever I please. I didn’t have to consider someone else.

I get the whole toilet to myself too!

Well in my hostel, we have shared toilets – there are 2 toilets at opposite corners on one floor. On normal days, the toilet can get REALLY gross and disgusting. For example, pooping/peeing without flushing, leaving underwear in the toilet, washing dishes in the toilet sink but not cleaning up after – leaving food residues clogged at the drainage (this, I HATE the most) and hair EVERYWHERE. I understand that females tend to have more hair fall issues than men but what I can’t understand is why is there a bunch of hair at the laundry area? Do they wash their hair and clothes at the same time? Maybe. So yeah during the mid semester break, I was pretty much the only person using the toilet nearest to my room and it was my happiest toilet moments ever. The toilet was most of the time dry and clean. It didn’t smell like a public toilet. And I didn’t have to clean the toilet as the daily cleaner still comes and clean it everyday!

I get a peace and quiet environment.

Practically 95% of the students that stay in the hostel aren’t around. My hostel block is SO quiet and SO peaceful, it’s just great. I can get work done comfortably. On normal days, you get girls communicating with each other from ground floor to third floor with their annoying high-pitch screams, girls yelling, doors slamming, there’s just a lot of noise pollution. You’ll get it if you’ve stayed in a female hostel.

I get to spend time with WC :)

Well that’s if both of us are staying back. On normal days, we both have separate classes to go to and the only time I get to meet him is if we both have time for a meal together. WC says that he’ll try his best to have at least one meal with me everyday. And meal times usually goes by real quickly. When we’re both back home, we get to see each other even lesser even though we stay half an hour away from each other (family duties kot). So when both of us stay back, we get to spend more time together, eating and catching movies. Haha.

As much as I love staying back during the mid semester break, I do think of home and miss home. Because at home, there’s mom and dad and dogs and family. And I get to use the kitchen. Lol. In fact, I prefer going home during normal weekends instead of during a semester break. Going back on normal weekends means having a getaway from stinky toilets!
