Before tomorrow’s kickoff of 2WC’s Summer of Blockbusters, I thought I’d sneak in one last not-quite summer movie: “Mr. Peabody & Sherman”.
It’s no secret that I have a soft spot for well-done kid-friendly movies, so this isn’t so much a review as a love letter.
For those unfamiliar, “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” is a classic tale of an above average intelligence dog, Mr. Peabody (Ty Burrell) who adopts the orphaned Sherman (Max Charles).
Now, when I say above average intelligence I mean this dog has invented time travel and travels in the wonderfully named, Wayback Machine, with Sherman throughout history so he can learn about it first-hand.
Of course, time travel comes with rules and it’s about time the children of the world learned about them. So, thank you “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” for educating the young ones who have not yet discovered Doctor Who (that’s advanced time travel, you’ll get there kids).
Sherman learns first-hand what happens when you break those rules as he and Penny (Ariel Winter)—a girl he’s forced to befriend after a bullying incident at school (she’s picking on him)—take the Wayback on a wayward adventure across the ages.
What Sherman doesn’t realize is that he’s not only putting the fabric of space and time in peril, but the fate of his own family as Mr. Peabody’s fitness as a parent is called into question.
What unfolds is a super smart, funny, touching story about unconventional families and friendships. I laughed, I cried, I looked forward to watching it again.
This wonderful romp down classic cartoon lane is the definition of a smart movie for kids and fun for kids of all ages, and I cannot recommend it enough.
