It's International Day of the Girl, and it seems like the perfect excuse to reflect on what it means to be a girl.
To put it simply, being a girl is complicated. There's no denying that girls (of all ages) have made great strides. Unfortunately, the world hasn't quite kept up.
We teach girls that they can do anything and be anything, which is great. The problem is that we seem to have forgotten to teach the rest of the world the same thing. The result is powerful, capable women in a world that seems to be working against them.
I know that's a bit of a downer, but it is what it is. The good news is that things are getting better. Women are being heard and/or taking charge. Things are changing.
Plus, I like to thing the obstacles make girls even better and stronger than they already are. They instill a sense of wonder and an ability to see the world as it could be.
So, on this the International Day of the Girl appreciate how far we've come, but remember to wonder and consider the potential of girls and the world they live in.
