Sports day again. And the sun shone.

I'm an old hand at sports day - this is the ninth summer as a parent at this school and I've only got eight more ahead as Boy Three doesn't start school til August 2014. So passing the half way point is good cause for celebration. Someone pass me a G&T, quick.

I have a couple of observations from today's athletic endeavour.

God knows we get precious few opportunities to break out our summer wardrobes, but please have some caution. Just because it's as hot as Ibiza doesn't mean rocking your Balearic babe look is necessarily a good idea. Just a thought...

I'm sure I say it every year, but why doesn't someone on the PTA see the money-making opportunity. Ideally they would serve fresh mojitos, but even an ice cream stand or lemonade stall would make a fortune on a day like today.

Wouldn't it be nice to have an alternative event for those of us with no intention of doing the mums' race, ever. I don't know, maybe a strolling slowly while chatting race or a who can eat the  chocolate the fastest race. Let those mothers who turn up at sports day in Lycra crack on, just find something else for the rest of us to do so we don't feel like we're letting our kids down.

Credit to the head teacher who gamely took her place in the lineup for the teacher's sprint. But who alongside her was prepared to let her lose?

Once again the main prize of the day must go to the school for arranging 450 children on plastic chairs alongside three separate painted tracks and having each of them competing at least twice. And the whole thing runs on time and is over with within an hour and a half. Remarkable. Perhaps following the spirit of Curriculum for Excellence, teachers should be allowed to run other areas of public life because they clearly have a flair for organisation.
