What is my pet peeve?
The running joke in my family is that they raised an unhurried child. They might have a point. I don’t like being rushed. Rushing, at least for me, leads to mistakes that can be avoided if I take my time doing X, Y, and Z. I’m a methodical person. Multi-tasking is all the rage, I know, but it doesn’t work for me. I much prefer tackling one task at the time, focusing on that one task, and completing it to the best of my ability. Whenever I attempt multi-tasking, I wind up flapping around like a headless chicken, getting nothing at all done.
No, I don’t like being rushed. I don’t respond well to being told what to do, when to do it, or how to do it either. I do best when I can do things on my own, in my own way, and at my own pace. If I’m given that freedom, being the methodical person that I am, I can focus, perform well, and complete any given task in a timely fashion.
Being rushed is not my biggest pet peeve though. The thing that really sets my teeth on edge and makes me tap my Jodhpur boot-clad feet against the ground in simmering irritation is standing in line. I hate standing in line. Yes, I know “hate” is a strong word, but I really do hate standing in line. Whether it’s at the bank, supermarket, or post office, standing in line raises my hackles. It’s an odd aversion to have for someone who doesn’t like to rush into or through anything. I can be patient in almost any other situation. But at the back of a long line, this unhurried child finds herself chomping at the bit like a race horse at the starting gate, desperate to be let loose and bolt to the finish line.
