Shopping is a favourite when it comes to us local Singaporeans. We love to go “gaigai” (window shop) and when we do, it’s so hard to resist that dress that’s on 50% sale! What we even love more, is to sit our butts down and “gaigai” on our computers.
Online shopping is a form of electronic commerce which allows consumers to directly buy goods or services from a seller over the Internet using a web browser – and it’s currently taking hold of the fashion industry in Singapore. Every Singaporean knows what a blogshop is – it’s basically a consumer based ecommerce retail business using blogging platforms – and it’s very popular amongst teens and young adults. From blogs to phone applications (that Carousell hype) and even Instagram, here are some reasons why Singaporeans are hopping onto the trend of shopping online:

Feel like shopping in the middle of the night, in your pyjamas? Do it online. Lazy for a journey to the west for a particular brand? Browse it online. Need new clothes but can’t find what you want offline? Try googling a blog shop.When you compare online shopping and real life shopping, you realize that online shops are much more convenient because you can browse them anytime you want to; they don’t have a closing time as online portals are open 24/7. Students who are preoccupied with their ‘O’ Levels or working adults will find it much more easy to get their outfits.

Blogshops tend to sell their items at lower prices to attract consumers over. Unlike the big brands, they have to compete in the fashion market with less advertising and marketing, thus the discounted prices. Many shops also offer discount codes and special promotions. It’s heaven for people like me who dislike crowds. Whenever there’s a special event happening (eg: Great Singapore Sale), the crowd at shopping malls go crazy. There are no long queues nor traffic that waste time and energy, so there’s more time to shop more!

Singaporeans know Singaporeans best. These blogshops are generally owned by locals, and they know what’s the latest fashion trends in Singapore. Teens, especially, find their preference in these shops whereby the items sold are trendy and up-to-date, unlike big brands, which are universal and mainstream. Not just the fashion market, there are blog shops catering to make up, stationary, flowers or music albums. You can get several products from the same sellers in one place, all hot off the shelf. Coloured contact lenses (also known as circle lenses) are the hottest beauty trend in 2016; the amount of blog shops selling them and gaining profit are off the charts!

That concludes why blog shops are so popular in Singapore right now. Personally, I feel that blog shopping will become a necessity for not just Singaporeans, but for people all around the world. No one can resist the convenience of a single click of the mouse!
