As I type this, I'm sitting in my cosy living room - enjoying the twinkling fairy lights on the Christmas tree and feeling very relaxed.
But I know that once the festive season is over, my living room is going to look totally bare and totally boring. I can't be the only one who finds themselves wanting to redecorate every January, can I?
I find the winter months pretty difficult, the darkness tends to take its toll on my mood as the months roll on and this year I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to focus my attention on giving the living room a bit of a makeover to try and inject some fun and quirkiness into it once the holiday decorations are done with.
I don't want to spend a fortune on paint work and new furniture, instead I just want to add a few select pieces that bring some fun back into the room - here are my top ideas so far.
1) A Quirky Wall Light
The main thing I always miss most of all after Christmas is the lights, so I think that decorating with jazzy neon lights would really help to fill that void.
There are so many designs available that it's difficult to narrow it down, but when I saw this Be Kind light I was immediately sold on it - I love the rainbow effect and of course, the sentiment behind it too - we could all do with a reminder to show some kindness after all.
I think this would make such a great addition to the room, creating a real focal point.
2) Some Greenery With A Bit Of Twinkle
I absolutely love the way that plants and greenery add a sense of calm to a room, but I have to admit that I'm not always the best at keeping them alive so I think that going down the artificial route would certainly be best - both for me and for the plants!
I love the look of large spider plants and I think it'd look great in place of the Christmas tree over in the corner of our living room, I'm even tempted to add some fairy lights for that bit of sparkle to brighten up the winter months.
3) A Cute Reading Nook With A Funky Seat
I've been thinking about replacing our tired old tub chair for a while now, and rather than replacing it with just another boring arm chair I've been thinking of some fun and fresh alternatives...my current favorite ideas are either a macrame swing chair, or perhaps a wicker egg chair. I know that both are probably meant more for outdoor spaces, but there's no hard and fast rules around it right?!
I think they'd be great for a quirky living room look, and...once again...I'm thinking of adding some fairy lights. Everything looks better with fairy lights!
4) A New Lamp
We don't have many light sources in our living room, and I think it would be quite nice to not always need to have the main overhead light on so the addition of a nice standing lamp would be ideal.
I'm thinking a large copper lamp, or perhaps even something a bit more quirky such as mood lighting or something along the lines of a rainbow light would be even more fun and unusual.
5) Some Eye Catching Artwork
At the moment all of our framed photographs in the living room are family pictures, but I've been thinking for a while now that it would be nice to include some art work such as Banksy prints or maybe even some funky song lyric prints or framed photographs of favorite musicians. I love the idea of having a framed photo of Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush up on the wall.
Using one or two of these little additions will certainly give our living room a fresh new look for the new year, without breaking the bank - I'm excited to see how it looks!
Do you have any tips for freshening up a room on a budget? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
