Taking a young child on a car journey for the first time can be a scary experience. Cars are statistically the most dangerous mode of transport, with 1.35 million people killed in road accidents each year. So it’s understandable then that the idea of strapping in your newborn baby and taking them onto a busy motorway may fill you with dread.
But the truth is, as long as you are a safe and careful driver, the risk is relatively low. Most accidents occur as a result of reckless driving, and it usually takes two bad drivers to cause a crash.
There is no reason why you shouldn’t drive your child to school or take them into town with you. After all, do you really want to bring a screaming infant with you on the bus?
To help you alleviate your worries and ensure the utmost security of your little one, here are five tips for keeping your child safe in the car.
Follow the law
Each country has its own unique laws relating to child car safety. In the UK for example, the law states that a child must use a car seat until they are 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall, whichever comes first. There are also regulations around which car seats are acceptable for safe use, so make sure you follow these rules before taking your little one for a drive.
Fit the seat correctly
All car seats are different, and some models may not fit in certain cars. So it’s always worth testing out a seat in your car, or talking to the sales advisor, before buying it. You should choose the correct seat for the height and weight of your child, and absolutely make sure it is installed properly. Studies have shown that two thirds of car seats are incorrectly fitted, which, in the event of an accident, could result in serious injury or worse.
Buckle up
It is illegal to drive a car unless all passengers are buckled up, not to mention dangerous. Always check and double check that your child is securely in their seat, and never strap in more than one passenger with the same belt.
Add additional safety features
As well as a car seat and seatbelt, there are additional items you can buy that will increase both your child’s safety and your own peace of mind. A “Baby on Board” sign will make other road users aware that there is a child in the car and they will be more likely to drive carefully as a result. While convex mirrors, sunshades, and belt locks will also add extra security.
Drive safely
It goes without saying that the most effective way to keep a child safe in your car is to drive carefully. Be extra observant of other drivers, and stick to a reasonable speed for the duration of your journey. Never assume another driver will stick to the rules of the road so keep your eyes open for potential hazards.
