5 Ways to Cut the Costs when Moving House
When moving house, the financial costs can quickly mount up. Frequently, the stress of moving is only compounded by the moving expenses that need to be paid. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the costs of moving. Plan effectively for your move, collect credible information and think carefully about how costs can be reduced. Be mindful of your spending when it really is time to move, as it is possible to reduce or at least manage the costs.

1: Be practical and use a storage facility

Almost invariably, people make the mistake of taking everything that they own to their new home. Use of an offsite storage facility, such as Fort Knox Storage, is an excellent solution to carting and trying to find a place for items that you no longer use and currently do not need. Remember that you pay for everything that you move. Rather than transporting all of your belongings to your new house and paying for this, consider the use of a quality storage facility where your goods will be stored safely, securely and in a clean and hygienic environment. When you use such storage, you can easily access your items at times that the facility is open – typically long hours. Use of a storage facility represents good value and is a wise investment.

2: Research

As with so many things, doing your research and comparing prices and services will ultimately save you money. Look for the best prices available, but ensure that you understand what your money will buy. For example, it may cost you less to independently hire a moving van, but are you prepared to lift and carry all of your items? If you hire professional movers, this would be included in their charges. Also consider the cost differences for having movers in to pack up, pick up and deliver items to your new house. This can be very convenient and make the experience of moving more pleasant – if your budget allows.

3: Sell some of your items

If you have identified items that you do not need or want at your new home that are still in good condition, consider offering them for sale. Many people are surprised at how sought after particular items are and appreciate the extra funds they provide when sold. Of course, items that are not suitable for sale may be good enough to donate or give away. Try to reduce the amount of rubbish you create as a result of your move and recycle whenever possible.

4: Ask family and friends for help

Professional movers do not need to be involved or help with all aspects of your move. Seek the help of your family and friends. As you go through and clear out, you may even find some items that you can give to them, or perhaps you could host a barbeque or drinks to thank them for their help.

5: Borrow or reuse packing materials

Try to avoid using too much packing material and, whenever possible, avoid buying new packing materials. It is more cost effective and has less impact on the environment when you borrow or reuse packing materials. Remember too that any good, sturdy boxes and containers can be used for storage and transportation of your goods. There are many ways to cut the costs of moving. Advance planning is critically important, as is careful research and getting rid of things that you really don’t need prior to your move.
