5 ways to keep your house clean when you have kids

Keeping your home clean is hard enough at the best of times, but if you have children, it can be ten times harder. If this sounds familiar, then it might be worth implementing some of our tips to see if it makes things any easier for you.

Here are 5 ways to keep your house clean when you have kids.

A place for everything

One of the first things you should try and do is to ensure that everything has a home within your home. When there is an allocated space for it all, it makes it easier to put things away and minimises the levels of mess. It also makes it straightforward for the kids when they are helping out.

Get the professionals in

If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a cleaner to come in a few times a week to keep your cleaning on track. The more kids you have, the less time you have (and if you work too, it becomes even harder to juggle everything), so instead of running around trying to be all things to all people, lighten the load and hire a cleaner.

Have flooring cleaned once or twice a year

If you have carpets throughout your home, the chances are that they have seen their fair share of spills from food, drink, slime, glitter, and other things that kids enjoy. It can be hard to keep them clean, so it's a good idea to have them professionally cleaned a few times a year. The same scenario applies in terms of rugs, so whether you require antique rug cleaning or want your shag pile rug to be brought to life once more, there are flooring specialists who can help.

Create a cleaning rota

Trying to clean your home from top to bottom while simultaneously looking after your children can be overwhelming, so instead, it's easier to break it down into manageable chunks. If you aren’t sure where to start, there are loads of cleaning rota templates online which can be adapted to suit your needs. The more structured your cleaning routine is, the more likely you are to stick to it - and it will also ensure that you have lots of free time to do fun stuff with the children.

Be realistic

It's crucial to be realistic when running and home and taking care of a young family. You may be the most organised person on the planet, but if there aren’t enough hours in the day, nothing you do will change that. You may want your home to look pristine at all times, but the truth is that if you have young children, that's probably not realistic. Consider what is achievable, structure your time, and don't put too much pressure on yourself.

Although having a lovely, clean home is what we all strive for, a bit of dust never hurt anyone, and let’s face it, spending quality time with our families is far more important.
