A Doctor's Life

Posted on the 30 June 2008 by Sweetlomiranda
They say becoming a doctor is a calling. Just like priesthood, the phrase " many are called but few are chosen" is an apt term for those in the medical field, especially doctors. Never mind those heavy books they have to carry around, or those alien terms they have to decipher, or those many nights they have to burn the midnight candle. Any diligent individual can do that. Those are just the scene in med school. After med school, it's a different story. You are totally on your own. An individual's life is literally in your hands. This is where the test of quick reflex, presence of mind, intelligence, wisdom, morals, compassion, empathy, etc. all come into play all at the same time. Not everybody can do this. Not everybody is cut out for this kind of career.
Just imagine yourself in your pajamas, watching your fave movie and then suddenly the phone rings. You have to change (or not!) the quickest time possible and get to the hospital. Once you get there you have to act quickly and wisely to save your patient. As if this is not enough, you have to deal with hysterical (which is normal) family members. When your patient is stabilized (or otherwise), you have to face the family and tell them of the prognosis or initial diagnosis. Even though doctors love their jobs, facing the family is the worst part. I mean wouldn't it make you a bit uncomfortable telling them that their loved one's status is deteriorating? How can you be honest without hurting them? There is just no way. Then wouldn't you, as a doctor, also hope for a miracle? At the end of the day, wouldn't you also ask yourself if you exhausted every possible means to save that person's life? Indeed a doctor's life is not for the faint of heart.
That is why I the greatest respect for all physicians. I congratulate DR. EDGAR VINCENT T. MIRANDA for finally extending his service to the Surigaonons. He specializes in Internal Medicine. His clinic is located at Kilometer 1, Surigao City, Philippines. You can visit his website at http://www.evmiranda.webs.com/
