A Fresh Start

“Select All”

“Delete”

This is how my day started.

You may notice that the content I have generated over the past few years of on-again-off-again blogging is now gone.  This isn’t an error, this wasn’t a mistake, this was intentional.  I have always found it easiest to change direction with a clean slate rather than with a long, incoherent stream of consciousness weighing me down, and when I was looking back through some of my old posts that is exactly what I saw.

When I re-booted this site in March, I put up all the old posts, I uploaded all the old pictures, and I even put up the same old theme with every intention of continuing where I left off.  However, where I left off was a completely different place than where I am right now.  The majority of my posts were written during my down-time when I was a lab technician at a biotech company.  I was thinking a lot about science and about the world of biotechnology, I was blindly pursuing the idea of starting a biotech company in my apartment, I was trying to decide what to do after college, and this blog was basically just a way for me to gather my thoughts and distract myself from the actual decision making that needed to happen.

Now, however, I am in a very different place than I was then.  Now I am a graduate student with a wife, two dogs, and a mortgage, and the person I am today could not be further from the person I was just two years ago when I was writing the original set of Bearded Biologist posts.  I hate to say I have become more “mature” or that my “eyes have been opened” or anything like that, but what I do want to believe I now think differently than I did then.

What shocks me most is that when I look back is the incredible amount of time, energy, and money I put into things that essentially got me nowhere.  At the time, of course, I thought these ideas were incredible and not pursuing them could be a giant mistake, but in reality I was probably just spinning my wheels and making a lot more smoke than fire.  This time, however, things will be different.

I am starting this blog fresh, with a new purpose I will outline in a series of coming posts. What you need to know right now is that I will do everything in my power to provide thorough, thoughtful commentary on what is going on in the world of science and scientific industry, and hopefully I will provide people a reason to laugh, or to wonder, or to think.   This should be quite an adventure, and I hope you will come along with me.
