A Mommy Makeover is About Looking Like Yourself, Not Looking Perfect

A Mommy Makeover is About Looking Like Yourself, Not Looking Perfect

At a certain point, even perfectionists have to abandon their standards during parenthood.

Motherhood means dealing with messes that seem to self-regenerate when you turn your back to them, and constantly breaking your own self-imposed rules. If you’re looking for perfection in parenthood, you will find pure insanity.

Being a parent is an endless stream of concessions. You concede one thing for something you want even more. You concede that you don’t want to make something healthy to eat because you want a simple pizza right now. You concede that you would really much rather rest than worry about your appearance.

Your own looks are often the first thing to be sacrificed for the greater good. Eventually, you reach a point where you quickly look in the mirror before going out, and you don’t recognize the woman looking back at you.

“With many of my patients, it’s not so much about looking young or perfect. It’s about trying to re-capture some of the body that they used to have,” said Dr. Stephen Mulholland, a top plastic surgeon in Toronto.

“They don’t want to look like a celeb mom. They just want to look like themselves again.”

What is a Mommy Makeover?

The mommy makeover isn’t an actual surgery, it’s a bespoke set of procedures that are customized to your goals.

Typically, it includes any combination of:

   Stretch mark reduction

   Cellulite removal

   A breast augmentation and/or lift

   A liposuction or tummy tuck

   A labiaplasty

Of course, the price is dependent on which procedures you go ahead with.

What About à la Carte Procedures?

Of course, you may not need all of those procedures, and a simpletummy tuck can be remarkably effective.

The tummy tuck is very popular with moms (it’s the4th most popular procedure for women aged 30-39) because it doesn’t just remove extra fat. It also targets the loose skin and stretch marks that no amount of cardio can get rid of. If you’re only looking to trim up your tummy, this could be the way to go.

Or, if you’re just looking to firm up your breasts, a simple breast lift can be very effective and probably less expensive than an entire mommy makeover.

What is the Recovery Time Like?

Again, this all depends on what procedures you go with. If your makeover includes a tummy tuck and your stomach muscles, this will likely require the longest amount of downtime. If that’s the case, you can resume most activities after about 3 weeks and experience a full recovery after 6 weeks.

If you’ve ever considered getting plastic surgery, you may have wrestled with an old stigma that plastic surgery is only for shallow people. However, that myth is dying. The impact of everyone having to log onto Zoom every day during COVID-19 lockdown may have been enough to change a lot of people’s perceptions.

In fact, The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently (mid-COVID) surveyed 1000 people that had never had any sort of plastic surgery. A whopping49% of respondents said they were open to getting their first plastic surgery. Attitudes are definitely changing.

So, if you’re considering a mommy makeover, or any other procedure, don’t feel like you’re being selfish.

It’s not selfish to want to feel like yourself again.
