A Wedding Photographer’s Playtime – Why the Fujifilm X100F Fits the Bill

Posted on the 22 October 2017 by Belinda Mccarthy @b_mccarthyphoto

Are you the kind of wedding photographer who sees it as simply a job - or do you always take a camera with you, constantly on the lookout to capture moments away from the work of your wedding days?

Now, I would imagine that if you're a DSLR user, you probably don't carry one of these highly capable, yet rather impractical, beasts around with you all the time. I imagine this as I used to shoot with a DSLR for many years, and there's no way I'd be rocking one of those babies when I popped out to the shops, or even on a relaxing walk. They are just too large and too heavy to use as your EDC (that's Every Day Camera to you and me). Even when it came to holidays, I would rather leave the gear at home, as it just felt.... too much like work.

So, if you shoot DSLR and you're a clever clogs, then you probably have a different type of camera to use as your EDC. Something that you can pop into a pocket, perhaps. But, there again, maybe you don't - because you find the differentation between the quality of your DSLR images and your little pocket camera just too much to bear. We're professionals, right? Even when we're shooting for pleasure, we want the shots to look awesome.

So, without banging on about it, that was one of the revelations I found when I changed over to the Fuji X-series cameras. Not only were they perfect for my work as a wedding and portrait photographer, but they were also light and nimble enough to carry with you for pleasure, too. And once I discovered the X100F, that was even more of a revelation. It even made my X-Pro2s feel large! (which obviously, they really aren't).

So when it comes to my downtime, and I want to photograph the things that are important to me, the X100F travels with me. In fact, it's always in my bag, wherever I go. Travel camera? Check. Capturing the face of the small person when I pick him up from school? Check. Unobtrusively photographing a stranger in the street? Check. (That's street photography, by the way, not being a weirdo).

So now the wedding season is slowing down, and - eep! - Christmas is starting to loom large in our minds, if you haven't already got an EDC, why not start thinking about it for your Christmas list? You'll notice that I haven't written a large technical description of what makes the X100F a great camera in this blog. I'm going to keep it very simple.

Great images. Silent operation. Light as a feather. Looks so pretty I could cry.

So I'm going to wave goodbye for a week or so and get myself some downtime after a busy wedding season. I'm taking my X100F with me, of course. Hopefully, I won't be lazy and I will be photographing many moments that will become hugely valued memories for me in future. Just like we do for our wedding clients. So don't forget to capture your OWN memories.
