When I was younger I did now know how to wear scarves. I still remember my mother in the 1970s wearing her Hermes scarves on her head, tied under her chin, much like you see Queen Elizabeth wear hers today. Maybe for that reason the traditional “square” shape felt old-fashioned to me and I did not quite know what to do with it. (Except wear it around my head and that was not something I was prepared to do.) As I have gotten older and have a “proper job” now, I love accessorizing my work wear with scarves. In my opinion a beautiful scarf adds instant glamour and sophistication to almost any outfit. Kate Spade and Ted Baker have been my recent favourites. On top of my fantasy list are the new Alexander McQueen and Damien Hirst designs. (And when I say fantasy list- these scarves go for hundreds of pounds.) Hirst is a British artist famous for his diamond encrusted platinum skull, (which sold reportedly for a cool £50 million) so he is the perfect choice to create a collection which celebrates 10 years of the iconic McQueen skull motif. The collection includes 30 different designs adapted from Hirst’s “Entomology” paintings. To be fair, they are all so beautiful, I would wear any of them, but these are my favourites. Fashion photographer Solve Sundsbo has created a mesmerising short film about McQueen scarves, which shows fashion truly is art.
