While Ganges and its tributaries were busy drowning Uttarakhand and thousands of people who lived there or were visiting the pilgrimage centers, the rest of the world was busy with their "job" or making good use of the calamity. While there of course were a few good Samaritans who genuinely helped the people, majority of others used it as a chance.
Selling food: While people were dying due to lack of food there were a few who chose to sell the food they have at exorbitant prices. Five thousand rupees for a meal for five, two hundred rupees for a biscuit packet and so on. One may argue if they didn't chose to sell food, there would have been a riot for food. It is also unfortunate but fascinating play of money, necessities and life.
Selling Communalism: While people continued to die, there were a few who were raising cries on how higher compensation was given for the Haj Pilgrims as compared to now. An opportune moment to smear communalism into a calamity.
Selling oneself: What I mean in refined terms is "marketing oneself". What Mr. Gujarati Chief Minister is trying to do or successfully doing. I don't really care if the operations are disturbed, doesn't really matter if a few more people die, I'd rather have my picture in all the newspapers, news channels and internet for being the most efficient person in rescuing "his people". And here we have full fledged campaigns on how we need him at the center and such a calamity would never happen. Ofcourse Ganga is a Hindu, she would listen to the Hindutva wouldn't she!.
Selling Spirituality: While the kith and kin of the victims continue to grief, a few other fatalists are ready spreading talk of them reaching kailash or heaven.
Selling Environmental thought: Whether it is right or wrong is a judgmental call, but the environmentalists have taken the chance to say "This is what happens when you challenge Nature and destroy it"
Selling Politics: The opposition is lynching at the opportunity to say "Congress led governments in both center and state. See how bad the disaster management is".
Selling News: This is something which happens across all kinds of happenings. Report how many died, report how they died, why they died, what if they hadn't died and so on....
With the example of this incident the larger point I intend to make is on the human nature, in sickness and health, birth and death all we seem to care is what's in it for me?
