Let’s be honest (because the title says so) we all lie on occasion, preferably to spare feelings, but for one reason or another it happens. It’s a less than admirable part of human nature, but it is what it is.
But what if we couldn’t? A recent study tested that theory, asking half of its subjects to refrain from lying for 10 weeks. That included their progress reports, which involved a polygraph test. So, even if they did lie, they better not lie to the researchers.
How did they do? Much better. It would seem that lying is bad for you. Sure you may spare a few feelings and egos, but it is actually bad for your health.
The free-wheeling, truth-skirting control group had more health problems–headaches, depression, insomnia, indigestion (you name it they had it)–than the speakers of truth (if only by force).
It gives you pause, yes? If only to reconsider next time you feel like bending the truth. Because honestly, it’s good for your health.
