Dear T,
Life is a wonderful journey where we meet souls that sync with ours. Sometimes we meet them early in life and take the journey together and there are those we meet along with way. We see them, and our souls meet and click, as if the missing pieces just came together.
For me, the first person in this list would obviously be my Mom and I write about her often. I miss her. Next to her, it is you, my best-est friend, the one who never lets me down.
Truly, friends are the family we have the privilege of choosing for ourselves.
From the time we met in elementary school, we've been so close. We've shared crazy times, laughter, misery, fury - and sometimes, the odd boyfriend, only to drop him far sooner than he ever expected.
We literally lived in each other's hair and it certainly helped that we lived so close to each other. I laugh to think how mad our Mums would get to see us standing by the gate and talking until all hours, and going out and coming back much later than we promised - not that it stopped us.
Living in different cities for a few years definitely did not stop us from staying in touch on the phone and via letters - whoa - remember the cards we constantly gave each other? You weren't' much of a letter writer but you more than made up by simply landing up at home - the presence was far sweeter!
I feel all teary-eyed when I think of the fabulous birthdays we've celebrated together.
Even when we started our careers, we would hang out with each other so much that everyone who knew us, knew we were inseparable. Ah, those bike rides to remote areas and chai by the roadside!
My heart feels all warm inside when I think of those days when I had to make sales calls far away - and you would come along to keep me company. What fun it was! Even more fun when we screamed Summer of '69 with Byran Adams.
Those economy meals at the Taj when we were broke tasted so delicious because we were together, howling our heads off over the guy who scratched his underarm before he served the papads, which we quietly ditched.
Those days we sat talking through the night, realizing it was morning only when the milkman rang the doorbell, making us jump out of our skins!
Sitting in a pub and catching up on our paperwork in peace in the afternoon, with a pitcher of beer to motivate us.
Those New Year Eves when we remembered nothing the morning after!
Bumming off each other's clothes to wear and squabbling over them.
The time you accompanied my Mom to the doc because I didn't get back home from work on time.
Drinking endless cups of coffee while lazing the day away.
Playing hooky together from college.
So many memories!
The best part? We couldn't have been more different from each other, but perhaps that's what makes us such a great pair. We don't even have the same likes and dislikes or similar habits!
Yet, we've been really close for over 40 years. Even though we eventually got married to wonderful guys and moved, and now live in different countries, the distance between our hearts is nil.
I am grateful we're best friends.
You sense when I am sad and before I am about to burst into tears, the phone rings and I hear your voice. I dream about you when you're going through a crisis.
We can tell each other anything. ANYTHING. We never have to think before we speak, or edit our language.
So maybe you live 9000 miles away, as the crow flies, in a different country but that didn't stop us from meeting. What a wonderful time we had together when we visited you for three weeks. How you bullied me when I cried my eyes out when it was time for us to leave even though you were sobbing too!
I look forward to our marathon phone calls that run into hours every week - closest thing to meeting up, and I am happy we have WhatsApp to share photos, videos and messages instantly.
You believe in me and make me believe in myself.
You constantly encourage me and love me unconditionally.
You can be brutally honest with me and I know you have my best interests at heart.
You are completely non-judgmental.
You are crazy and I love you.
You are the one person I can count on, no matter what.
Tomorrow is Best Friends Day, and I am glad you are mine.
Trustworthy, reliable, strong.
