Bored to Death

Bored to DeathNo, this post is not about the HBO series starring Jason SchwartzmanZach Galifianakis, and Ted Danson about a writer who decides to take up a job as a private detective to make life more exciting (considering it never made it past season 3, I don’t think it was all that great to begin with, so why blog about it right?).  No, I mean have you ever had one of those classes where you sit there and want to bang your head against the wall?  It isn’t because the class is hard or makes you think too much, or is at 8 in the morning, it is because it is absolutely boring, and there is nothing you can do about it.  If there is one thing I hate more than a crying baby on an airplane, it is a class where I learn next to nothing.

I feel like there are some classes that should be about 5 class periods long, but thanks to the beauty of American education, I have to sit through an entire semester of Statistics in Psychology, when I could have been in and out of there in 2 weeks.  When a teacher takes an entire class period to go over roughly 6 example problems, you start to get the feeling that there is far too much time, and not nearly enough content. Is this not sad to anyone else?

I understand that some people learn slower than others, and yes, some of the people that are in the class with me may not exactly be mastering the content at the same rate that I am, but still, I am trapped in a room with no windows, forced to listen to a teacher talk at us about the same topic we have been covering for a week, and then go through practice problems in excruciating detail.  After how painful this class is, I realized that I am not cut out to be a psychology major.

Yes, psychology is considered to be one of the easiest majors, and yes the psychology classes are considered by many to be among the most boring (with any “health” class taking the top honors in that category), but honestly, I didn’t think I would be thinking of ways to break out of a classroom without anyone noticing before.  I knew psychology would be easy for me, I didn’t think it would be horribly boring and uneventful.

So, like Johnathan Ames, the main character in Bored to Death, I think I am going to make a change and do something more exciting, like become a biology major.  I will have to make a show about it now, and run it on HBO for a few seasons using actors I find at an indie film festival.

Thanks for reading!
