…Carry On

“The Bourne Legacy” may be missing its title character, but more than makes up for it with action and suspense.

Director Tony Gilroy, manages to make us forget that we’re watching a “Bourne” film sans Jason Bourne.

Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), our new protaganist, is a member of Operation Outcome, a black ops program that enhances its agents mental and physical capabilities with some pharmaceutical assistance.

When Bourne exposes several other defense projects, the US Department of Defense moves quickly to wipe out any and all related evidence—aka Operation Outcome.

Managing to avoid his extermination, Cross meets up with his sole fellow survivor Dr. Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz). One crisis averted, the two must now find a way to make Cross’ enhanced mental capabilities permanent before the US Department of Defense tracks them down.

Within the first five minutes of this film it becomes obvious that this film may be short a Jason Bourne, but that’s about it.

As Aaron Cross, Jeremy Renner is more than up to the task of carrying on the Bourne legacy. And in many ways is superior to his predecessor, who lacked the raw power and athleticism displayed by Renner.

Of course, what is a hero without their sidekick. Rachel Weisz as Dr. Shearing plays the damsel in distress well enough, but still manages to do her own bit of rescuing. She holds her own in this action packed picture.

If you’re a fan of the Bourne Series or just a fan of action films, this latest installment does not disappoint. However, if you’re a fan of the Bourne name, well…this film might leave you wondering just how long the series will hold onto it’s namesake.
