Deciding whether curiosity is a gift or a curse to humanity is a complicated endeavor. On one hand, our capacity for wonder, creativity, and problem-solving has transformed our species from a locally distributed band of primates into a planet-transforming group of toolbuilders and thinkers. On the other hand, it has produced a nearly unstoppable force of nature with the power to dramatically alter their planetary environment more profoundly than entire kingdoms of other organisms.
Our species has spent its history learning, categorizing and characterizing our observable universe with the hope of understanding it for our own benefit. In this exploration we have sub-divided the organism into its constituent organs, tissues, and cells, revealing the latter as the smallest unit of “life” as we know it. In this blog I will explore cell biology at its finest, and show how the cell can be used in myriad ways to achieve the functions of life even in the most austere conditions. Cells present an intelligence that goes underappreciated by those who haven’t seen their complexity. Hopefully this blog can show you something interesting is going on just beneath the surface.
