“Doctor Murali is ready for you,” Lina smiled at the waiting patient and gestured for her to follow.
Resignedly she returned to her desk, plunking down to watch the clock resume its slow tick around the plain white face. Her preoccupied mind had finally made a decision, she was going to call Ahmed and demand an explanation. The last two days had been unusually quiet and her phone was almost not worth having, she had stared long and hard at her mobile willing it to buzz with a text, something sweet and something which said he missed her.But for the last two days all she received was a quick one liner which more or less said hello, and that was the morning before. It had been a long forty eight hours and Lina had sent a couple of texts of her own that went unanswered. The more she thought about it the more she couldn’t wait any longer. On the pretense of visiting the toilet Lina marched determinedly into a cubicle and locked the door behind her. A steady ringing sounded in her ear, she waited with baited breath wishing the nauseous feeling would ebb away. Why was this so hard? It wasn’t as if they had a fight, was it? Hoping it was all in her mind, she listened to the dull drawn out tone.“Halla?” “Ahmed,” Lina breathed.“Lina, hey. What’s happening?”“You tell me, you’ve been a bit quiet. Where have you been?”There was a short silence, “yeah. Sorry about that. Just had a lot on.”Lina waited, unsure of what to say next. When he didn’t say anything either she tentatively approached the subject, “What are you doing this afternoon?”“Coming to see you,” he replied smoothly. Her heart jumped as if a surge of electric had shot through, lighting up her eyes in an excited glow that illuminated her face. “Really?”“Sure, I’ll pick you up from work.” She hung up feeling elated. Everything was okay, he had just been busy that was all. With her world restored Lina waited in the car park for the familiar Mercedes to swing into the lot, but when ten minutes had passed, the car still hadn’t materialized.Lina fingered the smooth edges of her mobile, should she call him again? Would that seem too needy? All the insecurities came back with a gush. After fifteen minutes Lina gave up and walked to the main road in search of a taxi. A sharp horn pierced the mid afternoon street noise and Lina turned in the direction of where she had just come from. The Mercedes winked at her under the heat of the sun, Ahmed had a hand stuck out of the window in a where-are-you-going gesture. It took a few more seconds before Lina found the strength to walk over to him, she had half a mind to get into a taxi and leave him staring after her.“Lina!”  His voice jolted her into motion and she closed the distance between them.“You’re late,” she snapped crossing her arms over her chest.“I know, I’m sorry. I just couldn’t get away from work.”“You should have phoned.” Lina pouted.“I was on the phone all the way here, the client was upset with something and I was trying to keep him sweet. You know how it is habibti. Yalla get in, let’s get something to eat.”Grudgingly Lina got into the cool interior, it was hard to stay angry at his beautiful face. They headed into the town center to a newly opened Turkish restaurant that wasn’t far from the coffee house they first went to. “Um, I have a small request.” Ahmed started.“Mm?”“Would you mind covering your face? It’s just that I don’t want anyone asking questions.”“How would covering my face help?” Lina wasn’t sure she wanted to cover up just to enter a restaurant.“Well, it would just be less obvious that we were on a date. You could be my sister, mother or anyone. They wouldn’t know as they can’t see how young you are.”Well when he puts it that way, it does make sense. Lina threw the end of her scarf over her face and followed Ahmed down the street to the entrance of the restaurant. She had to concentrate on where she was going as it was hard to make out the tiny details from behind the veil, but once they were shown to their booth and the curtain was drawn she was free to remove the fabric.Ahmed settled in next to her and slid his arm around her shoulders. “You’re not worried about the waiters coming in?” Lina nodded towards the silk curtains.“No, they always call out before entering. So I can do whatever I want, including this…” he lowered his voice and brought his lips over Lina’s.Lina’s eyes closed, she had missed him. Eagerly she explored his mouth twisting around in her seat so she could feel him better. The curtains rustled and a voice called out. Ahmed jumped back and rubbed his lips with his fingers.Leaving a foot between them he called out for the waiter to come in. Menus were presented and the food was ordered. Lina had no idea what food was coming but she didn’t mind as she some quality time with Ahmed. The waiter retreated and the curtains were closed once again. Ahmed slid back over and took her hand in his.“So where were we?” “Right here,” Lina murmured climbing into his lap.His hands wandered into her abaya and Lina arched back allowing him to tease her. As his hands inched under her shirt and Lina wished the food would never come, she didn’t want to be disturbed.A short while later the waiter called out again and Ahmed lifted Lina off his lap and back onto her seat. Lina rushed to pull down her shirt and button her abaya again, but the waiter didn’t give her enough time, the curtains swished and Lina was forced to hold her abaya closed as an amused looking waiter placed the drinks on the table.Lina felt her face flame, did the waiter know what they were doing? She peeked up at him but he gave nothing away. The curtains closed for a third time and Lina cast a worried glance over at Ahmed who was frowning.“What’s wrong?” “This isn’t the place to be doing this…” his swiped at his unruly hair.“I thought it was quiet exciting.” Lina trailed a finger up his arm.Ahmed smiled, “I think we should go somewhere quieter?”Lina nodded. The food arrived and they ate not really tasting the flavours. Both of them were eager to finish what they had started, the chemistry between them was unbearable, like a fire that had to be put out. Ahmed paid the bill and together they hurried from the restaurant and into the car.“Where are we going?”“My garage? We can’t get a hotel as they ask for ID, it’s too risky.” With no other option Lina agreed and sat twisting her hands at the mix of emotions that ran through her. She really did like Ahmed, he was almost everything she wanted in a man. She loved the way he mastered his hands along her body and she knew she wanted more. They arrived at his house and he drove straight into the open garage.“Just wait here until I pull the shutters down.”In the rearview mirror the shutters lowered and the garage dimmed, the car’s dashboard was the only source of illumination, highlighting her flushed cheeks. Lina felt her heart slamming against her chest, the anticipation was almost too much, she knew at that moment that she needed him, she needed him like air to breathe and food to eat. Ahmed kept the lights off and ducked into the backseat of the car.“Are you coming?” he patted the seat beside her.Lina slid in beside him and waited. He waited too. The silence was filled with electricity as neither of them made the first move. A few more minutes passed and Ahmed growled in her ear.“Don’t keep me waiting Lina,” his voice was authoritative with a hint of menace in it.Lina’s insides quivered, she turned to register the expression in his eyes, they glinted with hunger and his mouth closed roughly against hers. She held back a painful groan as he showed no mercy, tugging on her bottom lip so that it pulled away from her lower teeth then holding it in a tight grip that was sure to draw blood. He shrugged his shirt over his head and Lina was free to trace her hands over the planes of his smooth flat stomach. Holding her own stomach in, Lina ripped open her abaya and slipped her arms out of it. Ahmed smiled, his features shifted and a carnal growl erupted from deep within his chest.
