I was driving home today with my son Evan, and thought about going for walks and long hot summer days that I used to enjoy as a young girl. Sunday afternoons used to seem so boring and you could always tell it was 'Sunday' as nothing was on the 4 channels we had to choose from, no shops opened (that includes the 2 in my village) and normally it meant visitors were coming so I would always have to polish the lounge! This then got me thinking about going away on holiday when I was little....
Butlins are running this lovely competition, for bloggers to write about their favorite childhood holidays and special moments.
I never went on holiday with my parents; ever, they never went on holiday together and never had a honeymoon! I was however very lucky to have a wonderful childhood friend and her parents used to take me with them (now being older I know this was so she had company).
Every summer the caravan would be hitched on the car, pillows piled in the back along with books, colouring pencils and Eye Spy books (do they still make those?) and various other bits and bobs to keep us occupied. We went everywhere all over Wales, Devon and Cornwall and it always was great but there was one holiday that really stuck in my mind and will always be my favorite childhood holiday.
A holiday park in Cornwall was our destination, I was 13 (going on 21) and the world was our playground; as was the campsite! I can remember taking the tape player down to the shower block, foaming up my mohican and dancing to Anarchy in the UK VERY LOUD much to the actual amusement of the other campers (must have been quite funny to watch) there was a 'teen' disco with a up to the minute FLASHING floor - which we thought was amazing and we danced in there everyday for 2 weeks. The House Martins and Madonna were much over played and we loved every minute,
even if we did prefer I've Got A Fuzzbox and Sigue Sigue Sputnik! I even went to the on site hairdressers to have my hair done like this: (Bottom left) Seriously!
The thing that really made this holiday 'the one' was of course my first and actually only holiday romance, yes we met two leather jacket wearing, bad boys who were 15 and from Bristol and it was love at first sight! So for two whole weeks we were in sun basking, music listening, boy finding heaven and it was truly completely innocent great fun (except the odd cig behind the shower block).
Thinking back it all seemed so complicated back then, but compared to now it was so easy. I can't wait for Evan to experience places like I did and build his own memories but hopefully make better hair choices!!
