Collateral Damage!

"They are fueled by the N.G.Os receiving foreign funds"
"They are anti development"
"Just because of the baseless concerns we can't let the crores of investment go waste"
"It is not the people who are protesting, it is anti national forces"
"Oh, India can never be developed. These protests will never let it"
I'm no authority on nuclear science, nor do I know how prone or non prone Koodanukulam area is to Tsunami but the very fact that the people are protesting says something.
One might call it anti development view but the fact remains that the coming of a nuclear plant would change the lives of people of Koodanukulam forever and irreproachably. It is an accepted fact that nuclear plants are double edged swords. Useful they might turn out to be but harmful, if they turn out then there is no going back.
History has shown us how many times we have burnt our hands with the nuclear power. The intention is not to say we shouldn't pursue it but to ask some questions. Due to the nuclear release the entire sea ecosystem would be destroyed, the livelihood of the fishermen would be taken away, due to the radiations the people living there would be prone to harmful effects, but who will take responsibility for it. Or should we say it is the price to be paid for the nuclear energy, I can't help but wonder whether the people asked if they are ready to pay the price, and who decides who are to pay the price? It is for development of the nation, some would say without reproach but will the fruits of development ever reach the people who are forced to pay the price. And why is it that only the people on the fringes are forced to pay heavy prices?  Why is it that the public opinion which is so loud and on the face, ignored? Why is it that the protests also are colored with suspect? Now here we say it is the cost of development and impose it forcibly.
If we leave alone big things like nuclear power even in things like SEZ or some thing as trivial as road widening, it is always the people on the fringe who are effected. I have never heard  the house of  an IAS official, a politician or a CEO of a company be affected in road widening. Somehow it seems someone is paying the price of development and some one else is reaping the benefits.
Do I intend to say that there should be no "development". Well I definitely do not have answers. But stealing some one's life and saying it is for the larger good sounds like barbarian law. Or should we say it is Collateral Damage!!
