The first thought I had while watching this movie was, "Oh dear God. He's going to encounter some crazy out there and get killed. There's no way he will live through this. People are nuts!" As the movie went on, I was shocked. I was shocked at my seemingly suspicious and paranoid perspective of humanity. Had I only digested social media for so long that I get nervous thinking about meeting strangers, harmless or otherwise? Do I only hear and pay attention to the horror stories that I lose sight of the generosity and love that exists still in this world? The answer to both is YES!
My second thought was how under utilized Craigslist was to me and those around me. Did you know you could find a ride to a nearby or far off city? You can find a place to crash. Food to eat. Places to volunteer. And yes, even a date (yikes). It's all there. I had no idea that people actually asked for or provided these things to other people. So, of course, during the movie I looked at sections of the site I had never thought to look. They actually looked legit too. This is beside the point, of course.
We talk so much about community and finding it on Facebook, blogs, Twitter, but there is a community out there with real people. People who need and long for things. People who are looking to give to those who are in need. I know Craigslist is a site as well, but it leads to human interaction. It leads to an exchange of goods or services. Things that people need to survive. I was inspired by those who offered Joe some groceries, a ride, a place to sleep, clothing, etc. One of the families was from Iraq and they told Joe about their journey to America and how they are mistreated since the events of 9/11. Joe encountered a former Hollywood actress, living in New York, alone with cancer. She was clearly a hoarder and broke down about her fears of being alone and crazy and needing piles of stuff to feel safe and alive. The stories and relationships this guy found along the way gave me hope for the future. People are generous. People are kind. People are looking for something. Its a constant that I found with each person that Joe encountered. They were looking for something.
