CV and Resume Writing Tips

Posted on the 20 December 2011 by Bazkarim @BazKarim

When i attended the exquisite five day Oil and Gas job fair that was held in Jerudong, Bridex, i attended a very useful talk by Dr. Ee Ah Meng, who I believe is a senior lecturer in the University of Brunei. His talk was on the subject of CV writing and Interview Skills.
What is a CV?
  • This is short for Curriculum Vitae which in fact is another term for a Resume.

I wont go into detail about the talk, only because i think it was something many people should attend in person. I will however mention a few tips he did mention that was worth noting down myself (some information about resume writing i didn't know)....i hope that made sense, it is the middle of the night and im feeling quite tired.
Tips n Info on: Resume Writing
  • When typing up the 'results' section of your CV, divide it up into three columns

CV and Resume Writing tips
  • In the 'Work Experience' section, always mention the skills you have learned.
    • Include what your job entailed.

  •  'Interest and Achievements' Section:
    • This is the section where you "Show off.." - so says Dr. Ee Ah Meng
    • Any evidence of leadership?
    • Evidence of employability.
    • Include everything you have done / achieved.
      • Stuff like: Sports activities, clubs you have joined....win any contests?

  • In the 'Skills' section:
    • Mention information such as : Languages, Computing Skills,...do you drive?

  • Always have at LEAST two references. Most preferably 1 from a former employer and 1 from your former educator / teacher.

Common mistakes when writing up your resume:
  • Praising yourself too much.
  • Not having a proper format to your resume - keep it organized!
  • Never leave off your references.
  • Always always spell check -  Spelling and grammar is important. (Also keep everything in the past tense)

Hope what i provided was informative - this was all i noted down during the talk. It was the only things i didn't know.
