We recognize that not everyone has the time to stay on top of their nominated film viewing. With just over 24 hours until showtime, it’s time to make some tough decisions. Don’t fret, we’re here to help. Through the magic of on-demand, and your local cinema, you can still get a few movies under your belt to inform your viewing tomorrow night. It’s not going to be easy. It’s going to take commitment, perseverance, and well-scheduled bathroom breaks, but we believe in you.
Be warned, this is highly subjective and presumes that you’ve already seen the higher grossing films in the top categories (ergo you will not find “The Martian” or “Mad Max: Fury Road” below). Here are our choices for last minute Oscar viewing:
“Inside Out”—It’s not a best picture nominee (but it should have been), and is a clear violation of the higher grossing presumption, but if you haven’t seen it by now, you really need to fix that. That’s why it’s at the top of the list. Priorities. Plus, won’t you feel smart when you call it for the win in “Best Animated Feature Film”?
Oh, and with a running time of 1 hour and 42 minutes, it’s also short, which is always a good thing.
“Spotlight”—Everyone seems to be split on who’s going to win Best Picture at this point, and we’ll get into predictions tomorrow, but win or lose, “Spotlight” is a great movie, you’ll be glad you watched it.
“Room”—We’re trying to steer clear of predictions today, but if someone were to ask which movie might have a shot at pulling an upset tomorrow in the “Best Picture” category, we wouldn’t say it couldn’t be this one…
“Brooklyn”—It’s a feel good coming to America story, it’ll fit nicely between the gut-wrenching stories in the “Best Picture” category.
…and if you insist on looking moderately informed on all the best picture nominees at your Oscar party, here are a few talking points to help you fake it…
“The Revenant” — The bear was amazing, as was Leo…and pretty much everyone else in the cast. Also, someone needs to get Leo an inhaler.
“The Martian” — It’s a shame they couldn’t get George Clooney off of Mars too…just kidding. That’s a different Oscar nominated film. We’d go with, an excellent film on surviving unimaginable circumstances…and lots of disco, snark, and potatoes.
“Mad Max: Fury Road” — What’s up with the guitarist?
“Bridge of Spies” — Did you see the literal bridge of spies coming? Mind blown!
“The Big Short” — ISDA, CDO, finance…those three should end the conversation pretty quickly.
Okay, you should probably get to it. The clock is ticking and you barely have 24 hours in which to binge view (and possibly sleep and eat too) the highlights of this Oscar season.
…bi-daily smile…
