Diagnose Yourself!

Posted on the 16 February 2013 by Missliabilities
After a morning meeting today discussing my firm's healthcare benefits, I am LIVID. I opted out of the offered healthcare insurance because as a healthy young individual - I rarely have any health problems. And yet my premiums were $300 a month for a $2800 deductible. That does not include dental. Vision care is not even offered.
So I'm self-insured with a very low deductible, half the premiums, and extremely happy. But to improve the firm, I wanted to participate in this meeting so we can be more attractive in the job market.
It started off badly as a doctor bashing session. Blah, blah they do all these unnecessary expensive tests, blah blah. The speaker gave the example of him twisting his foot while skiing. He thought he had broken it and when he went to the ER they told him about all these bone scans and fancy x-rays they needed, and he just went home wrapped it up with ice and was fine a few days later.
WELL GOOD FOR YOU.
He went onto say that they are going to have a healthcare education session on what to ask the doctors to test so that the cost isn't as high. All I could think of is a doctor suggesting a blood test for something that was clearly wrong and one of our employees rejecting it, thinking it's too expensive for my firm to cover.
This is going to end really badly for the patient or for this firm.
