Does God Have a Sense of Humor?

Posted on the 08 July 2013 by Albert Wagner @albertwagner4
When people think of God, one thing that probably does not come to their minds is a sense of humor.
God is Almighty, after all.  We think of him seriously.  (Just think about what he could do to people).
But, as these blogs take less-mentioned perspectives, here is a question to think of other attributes of God:  What if God, as the Creator of humans, knows how difficult it is to be human and realizes we could use a break from the grind every now and then?
Laughter In The Bible
The part of the Bible referred to the most in this sense is when God tells Abraham and Sarah that she will conceive a child.  What made this miraculous was that Abraham was 100 years old at the time, and Sarah was 90.  Sarah laughed at the thought of people so aged having children.  The Lord then said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ - Genesis 18:13.  Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.” - Genesis 18:15.
What made this funny was that is was outlandish.  Obviously, most people do not conceive children at that age.  So the humor was to emphasize something serious.
This brings up another point.
This task was not too big for the same God that created the heavens and earth out of nothing
There are other uses of humor and laughing in the Bible.  Job 8:21 reads:
He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.
In this passage it appears that laughter is a good thing in a way that is not outlandish.  Maybe, as indicated above, God does realize that being human is not easy and this is one part of life on earth.  God came to earth as a human, so he knows this firsthand.
Another example comes from Ecclesiastes 3:4,
a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
Again, it seems God realizes it is a part of life.
Outside of the Bible we have heard many times that laughter is healthy.  It can help those with many different types of diseases.
And, there is another example of a sense of humor that is in the Bible, although many do not look at it that way.
God overcame death by dying.
Of course this is not humor in the sense we usually think of it.  Ironic might be a better word.  Wouldn't a normal person question why God Almighty would come to earth as a human and suffer as he did?  It was physical suffering and mental suffering.  At one point he even asked, "God, why have you forsaken me?" - Matthew 27:46.  This, again, is humor in the sense of being outlandish.
God does not always work in the way you would expect.
It appears that God, in his infinite wisdom, acknowledges that humor is one part of human life.
This adds meaning to life because:  People sometimes feel guilty when they are laughing and having fun while others are suffering.  Since God created humans, it seems he realizes laughter is one part of human life.
