I can't believe I did it, but I did: I am now, and from this moment forward, officially, a returning college student. At the age of forty-three, for no other reason other than to better my career, I'm back at school. It's both exciting and scary at the same time, but so far, I'm loving it.
Interestingly enough, I was the "teacher" a couple of weeks ago when I was invited to speak at a Public Relations Course for El Tec de Monterrey, one of the largest and most important universities in Latin America.
It's incredible to see how the Internet connected me to students thousands of miles away, while less than one-hundred miles south from me, I also participated in the first annual Entertainment New Media Network Conference. Both opportunities allowed me to connect with people that were eager to learn.
While the opportunity to speak to University students-connected me with young adults ready to embark on a new career, the women that attended the blogging conference were eager to grow their existing online empire.
I will never forget one of the questions asked of me at both events: "What gives me confidence?" To which I responded, I know what I'm talking about. (Actually, I said "I know my shit to the group of adults," in a moment of weakness).
But secondly, and most importantly, I shared how important it is to "dress the part."
"It doesn't matter how much you know, how well you speak, and how connected you are, if you don't look like you know what you are talking about, you don't," I told a roomful of women.
It's not hard, really it's not, to look the part.
