It’s a problem that many of us face when planning on redecorating. Having a small, cramped space can be tough. From knowing where to put your sofa to your dining table, it’s easy to get bogged down with what seems like an unmanageable task so here are a few easy ways to spruce up a small living room.
Furniture
Firstly, it may be tempting to choose a huge corner sofa but when there’s not much room for maneuver it can overpower a room and make it look even smaller. Instead, opt for smaller pieces such as an attractive two-seater and combine with a statement armchair or ottoman.Multi-functional furniture can also help to increase the feeling of space in the room as an ottoman can be used both as a coffee table or an extra seat (and those with hidden storage can also help you to declutter!)
Placing furniture against a wall doesn’t necessarily make your room seem larger, sometimes placing your pieces centrally or at an angle can make it feel bigger as it creates breathing space.
Mirrors
It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book but it really does work. Mirrors work by reflecting light around the room making it seem bright and airy and if you place one opposite a window it’s guaranteed to make it seem open and greater. If you don’t want to go for wall-to-wall mirrors then consider one large full length mirror or even create a statement wall by hanging numerous mirrors on one side. It’ll certainly be a talking point of the room and it’s a quick and easy way to make it seem bigger.
Windows
Leave your windows undraped to create the illusion of space. Uncovered windows also help to bring the light into the room and will trick the eye into thinking it’s larger and it has more depth. If, like many of us, you need some privacy from the wandering eyes outside then invest in some lightweight, sheer drapes to enhance that light, bright and airy feel.
Paint
Although favoured in interior design circles, dark and dramatic colours can actually make a room feel smaller so keep your walls bright and neutral. Whites and creams help to open a room up and they also encourage the reflection of light from your windows and mirrors. Light and neutral colours expand the space so, although you may feel like a fuchsia pink wall will look great keep any extravagant color palettes to accessorising with ornaments, flowers and throws. If you do fancy a pop of colour, a bright ceiling will drive the eye upward and creates the illusion of depth and high ceilings. The ceiling can be your chance to release your inner interior designer!
