Listening to a lecture on Human history made me realize the contradictions in what originally different subjects were meant for and how we perceive them today.
If we get into the origins of the different sciences, all the sciences originated out of our curiosity to understand ourselves, i.e., our beginnings our evolution. The story of the fundamental features of the universe is called Physics. It examines how matter, energy, time and space interact with each other. It was intended to determine how the environment in which we live had come into being but in the course of evolution it is now used to determine how to destroy the environment we live in. In understanding why apple falls to the ground, we ended up making projectiles which can be thrown to not fall here but fall in a specific place so that we can create destruction in that particular space. If physics was to understand the particles Chemistry was to understand what happens when different particles interact with each other. If chemistry was intended to make sense of what happens when different physical particles come in contact with each other, today we use it combine the most unnatural of substances to maximize the destruction. Then came the study of living creatures, Biology. Biology was to give us an understanding that we are a part of the animal kingdom and how we form a small link in the majestic scheme of things in nature. We were to learn, how we are just another animal on the surface of the earth, how all our ancestors were common from the single celled protozoans to the most recent apes, how we had the most humble beginnings as hunter gatherers, how our organs are no superior than any other species. It was to ground us, it was to make us aware of our mortality but we unfortunately have understood that because evolution has brought us into the top of food chain, we are destined to rule the world. Instead of understanding our insignificance, we understood how all other beings are meant for us.
Going further ahead understanding of development of human cultures is history, it was supposed to give us a repository of knowledge of all the follies that we have committed so that we do not repeat the mistakes, but we end up forming fan clubs of monsters and idolizing the demons. In psychology we were to understand what makes us behave the way we do, so that we make efforts to suppress the brutal instincts but we ended up using it break the spirit of fellow human beings.
We somehow seem to have misinterpreted and misused the knowledge, we seemed to have started right but have lost track some where. Had we understood, all knowledge is to suppress that animal instinct which raves to kill, we probably wouldn't have seen so many wars.
