Eggcellent Apps for Reading

Posted on the 07 June 2013 by Suzanne Robinson @mummy2twinsblog

Does your child love playing apps on your iPhone, iPad or Android device? Well I know my twins do, and they have amazing computer skills already! Scary, what will they be like when they are older?

Why not use the new technology to help your child recognize words and help your child read. I’m currently trying to help my girls get more school ready since it is not long until they start Kindy.

My girls love to read and constantly take books from their bookshelf, love borrowing library books and just are desperate to learn to read. I’m spending time with them to help them learn new words, letters and so on, and why not make it an interactive experience with ABC Reading Eggs.

ABC Reading Eggs has a great apps:

  • Eggy 100 is FREE and features 100 sight words and interactive educational games. Learning to read is an important milestone in every child’s life. Knowing these sight words makes fluent reading easier, which lets the brain focus on the real enjoyment of reading!”
  • Eggy 250 is packed with 250 sight words that readers should know automatically “at sight”, such as he, the, was and where. This app covers 250 sight words using a fun and motivating game to keep kids learning.”

The apps from ABC Reading Eggs are for children from 3-12 years of age, so there are many different levels for different abilities. The apps are a great idea as it is a one on one lesson and you can do it over and over again if the child is having difficulty in one area.

The girls have enjoyed using the Eggy 250 as there are more choices for games and of course levels. I even learnt that there are even more choices as Julia swiped her fingers to move across the screen and there were more things to play. Maybe mommy needs to play more games on the Google Nexus?

As a mother I think that this app from ABC Reading Eggs allows the child to play in a fun way and still learn. Many apps are not fun and some are overly complex. This one is perfect for little kids and it allows for higher levels for bigger kids. We will definitely be using this application more and more. I also like when the egg cracks all over the screen. My girls have fits of giggles when this happens, which is a joy to hear.

We have tried both the Eggy 100 the free version and also to the Eggy 250 at a cost of $1.99. Why not download the app and get your kids well on the way to reading and recognizing words.

A great idea also is to subscribe to the 12 month subscription. In addition to the reading lessons in Reading Eggs there is Reading Eggs World which caters for children who already know the basics of reading but who still have much to learn about reading, writing, spelling, and comprehension. In Reading Eggs World, children have their own house to decorate, a big shop and an avatar that can walk and travel to many new destinations on Reggie’s bus. Children are able to choose their own adventure from a wide range of activities and places to go, including the following content:

The Story Factory – this gives children an introduction to creative writing and they can put together stories to enter in a weekly story writing competition.

The Reading Eggspress website has an enormous range of learning resources, lessons, motivational games and e-books. The books and lessons cover the Year 2 to Year 6 reading curriculum using an equal number of fiction and factual texts. There are 4 areas of the Reading Eggspress world:
