Etiquette | Should you be on the phone in a Supermarket?
Jo Clarke was shopping at Sainsbury's supermarket in Southeast London when a clerk refused to serve her because she was on her phone. She told News Shopper: "I was standing at the foot of the till waiting to bag my shopping up, yet the lady on the checkout was just staring at me, when I stopped my conversation and said: ‘Is everything ok?’
"‘She said: ‘I will not check your shopping out until you get off your mobile phone’.
"‘I ended my call swiftly, and said to the lady on the checkout: ‘Apologies, I didn’t realize that it was Sainsbury’s policy that you are unable to use your phone at the checkout’, and she said ‘Well you learn something new every day’."
Who was in the wrong? Both of them, but mostly the shopper. The cashier was a bit rude in my opinion, there are better ways of handling rudeness in your customers, and usually ignoring it is the best policy of them all. Although, I also thoroughly doubt that Jo Clarke said "Apologies, I didn't realize..." and if she did I can bet it was scathingly.  However the only person that the cashier was offending is the customer. Jo Clarke was offending the girl that was serving her, stuck behind her kiosk, all the customers in the queue behind her, and likely everyone she had passed when walking around the store.  The cashier is stuck putting up with your rudeness. You can wait and have your conversation outside.  Perhaps it's not a cashiers job to lecture on checkout etiquette, but someone had clearly had forgottten to teach Jo Clarke manners - so right on!  The Lesson: Be considerate. Having a decent level of consideration for your peers, colleagues, and those which are paid to serve you is just being a good human being. You thank the bus driver don't you, and don't listen to music too loudly on the train? Then hang up your bloomin' phone!  What is your pet peeve of public etiquette? Mine is people that drive around with their windows down and music up loud!
