Does your organisation ban you from using Facebook? Do they think it is a distraction? Well a number of companies do and therefore don’t allow staff to use Facebook, and I would imagine other social networking sites.

However for some this is changing. Facebook is trialling a new app called, “Facebook at Work” is to be used only by staff at the company you work for. It is exactly like your personal Facebook page, however it is a work Facebook page.

In my work I was allowed to access social media sites, but this was part of my job. Without accessing the sites, I could not do my job at all. So I was lucky I guess. It really depends on what role you doing and if the organisation sees value in the social media part of their business. Some don’t and a lot do, which is great.

Using Facebook at Work you can find out about events, meetings, documents, info, and directly send messages to teams and individuals in the organisation.

Releasing a social site directed solely at corporates makes me think that it is wanting to compete with LinkedIn, Yammer, Convo, Slack and Socialcast. I suppose what was next? Facebook has to keep on reinventing itself and being innovative. They already have the market cornered on social media and connecting people together regardless of how remote they are to each other. Why not do this for business. I do see their thinking on this.

I can understand that you would want to keep work and personal separate and that is a good idea, however in the 21st Century we live in an online world and the personal and work space are very blurred. You check online to see what a company is like and to get the details of reviews, bad experiences, and all the gossip. The same happens to a person who is looking for a job. If they have a social profile, this is judged before they have even met someone at a company, let alone the possibility of getting job there and more!

Facebook at Work is still being tested by a handful of companies and if you are a business that is interested you need to contact Facebook to give this new site a go.

The Facebook at Work app is available on iOS and also Android

This is what the description on the Google Play site reads:
Facebook at Work is only available to people who have set up a work account through their employer. Not using Facebook at Work? To let us know if you’d like more information, visit http://facebook.com/help/work.

• Companies use Facebook at Work to give their employees a place to connect and collaborate.
• Stay up-to-date with a News Feed that shows what’s new and relevant at your company
• Create and join groups to collaborate with co-workers
• Send messages to chat with one person or small groups of co-workers

Let me know if you are using Facebook at Work? Do you think it is helping? Has communication been better since using Facebook at Work.

I don’t think I would want to share my personal account with my work account. What about you?
