…fan out

As we all sit on the cusp of the final season of "Game of Thrones" and soak in the new Star Wars trailer (and I sit in the middle of a Star Wars Celebration weekend here in Chicago) fandoms are very much on my mind.

Although to be fair, fandoms are almost always on my mind. The communities people have created out of a mutual appreciation of a story is incredible and heartwarming.

Sure, fandoms have their dark side and have churned out some downright ugly mob mentality. I am looking at you Marvel, Ghostbusters, Star Wars, and I could go on, boys (there's no excuse).

But the fact that storytelling has a strong enough pull on all of us to evoke such passion (even when it's sexist and wrong) speaks to who we are as human beings.

And that (without the sexism, to be clear) is really cool.

So, whether your tastes lie in a galaxy far, far away...

...or just north of the Wall...

...or traveling through time and space in a blue box...

...or where no man (or woman) has gone before...

I hope there's a story out there that speaks to each of us.

...bi-daily smile...

If this doesn't make you weepy, you might not be a Star Wars fan, and that's okay (sort of).
