It’s true—when you take a step back and look at your life as an outsider might, it may look a little different. What’s fantastic about this exercise is that you get to reflect on things, and that’s what these posts are about after all. This particular daily prompt asks us to tell at least six unique, exciting, or just plain odd things about ourselves. I will give it a go and see what surfaces.
- SOMETHING ODD: Sometimes my fantasy world gets in the way of reality. This can be problematic. I tend to view the world as it should be and not as it is, which is why I completely enjoy the process of immersing myself into my fictional characters and world. The downside to this, or course, is that it can affect reality, and in particular, relations that I currently have because I expect them to behave as I would want my characters to behave, and therefore, the expectations I have of real people can often be disappointing. It’s odd, I know, but unfortunately, it’s true.
- SOMETHING ODD: As I have aged, I’ve become much more of a scaredy cat. I realized this over the weekend as I visited my brother in Pennsylvania and we took the kids tubing. The ski slopes were rising high above us, and I was telling my son a story of when I went on a ski trip to Vermont with my high school friends. I used to be much more daring, but now, I am just a big chicken about a lot of things. I’m not really sure why.
- SOMETHING UNIQUE: I like to write my own music on the piano. It’s just something I’ve always done, and I am forever grateful that I took piano lessons. In fact, for my upcoming book, I may use music that I’ve written as the score for the trailer.
- SOMETHING EXCITING: In the fall, I am teaching a local travel writing class at Stevenson. I’m super excited about having the students write and produce a book of local travel. Now that I’ve been through the experience of self-publishing, I can help my students do the same.

SOMETHING ODD: One night in college, my friend and I went out and the whole night we talked with British accents. I’ll never forget it. It was hilarious and the guys we talked to bought that we were from London hook, line, and sinker.
- SOMETHING EXCITING: I’ve been scheduled to talk at my hometown’s library in the fall about “Beneath the Mimosa Tree.” I think it’s an absolute thrill to be asked to go home and talk about a piece of work I’ve written that takes place in my hometown. To me, it’s beyond exciting: it’s thrilling.
