When I first moved to the South, preferably Florida, I started getting asked the main question, “Seminoles or Gators”. At first I thought it was a trick question!? I come from San Diego where I didn’t follow the NCAA. I’m a pure NFL loving fan, I’ve never truly known about how popular college football really is. In recent months, when we have been around family I’ve learned of the stories surrounding Scarlett’s father’s extreme Seminole pride, how his blood was red & gold, their 50 yard line 2nd row seats they’ve occupied for the last 15 years! A funny story also surrounding this was when I first moved here, I would always get Florida State & Florida confused. I got some weird looks when I’d mistakenly mention how awesome those “Florida State Gators” are! By now, I’ve learned the difference and understand what makes a Seminole better than a Gator.
As we woke up Saturday morning, it was our day off, we were contemplating how we’d spend our day. Scarlett’s mom called with the answer and extra tickets. “How about Stephen attend’s his very first FSU game”? We bolted up and rushed out to the door to partake on the 3 hour drive to Tallahassee, FL. The Florida State Capitol and home to the Seminoles. As we left the house, I was being told that I had to wear a Seminole hat and shirt, even a pair of sandals maybe. My thinking? “You have got to be kidding me, you’re telling me that college fans are this elaborate”? I went along with the shirt.
As we arrived to the Stadium, I was in shock. Garnett and gold shirts EVERYWHERE! Pants, Shirts, Cars, Glasses, Front Yards, all covered in Seminole gear. It finally hit me that just as much as NFL fans get into the game, NCAA fans are just as elaborate! I finally didn’t feel alone wearing my “Bobby Bowden is my hero” shirt to the game.
The game was amazing. Live marching band, amazing food, loud fans that stand for most of the game waiting for the teeth grinding play to happen. I went along with the crowd and learned the chants, the “chop”, and left the game now being not only an NFL Chargers Fan but now a Seminole fan. I’m looking forward to going to the game, it has a piece of my heart that I understand exactly why NCAA Football fans are as passionate as they are.
During our experience at the game, we filmed the day on our iPhone’s to produce a little documentary of the adventure. Enjoy! (Go Seminoles!!!!!!)
