In recent years cineplexes have been overrun by 3D spectacles.
True, some of them have been well done (“Hugo”). Others have at least been entertaining (the Marvel Comics series). But recently it’s gone a bit too far.
Not to pick on one film in particular, but does “The Great Gatsby” really need to be in 3D? Really?
What does the story gain from having Gatsby’s overwhelming literally wealth thrown in our faces?
(Now that I mention it, that does sound kind of entertaining)
For those among us who don our 3D glasses, but still secretly hope for its demise, there may still be hope. According to a recent report 2013 could see the first downturn in 3D movie attendance since it exploded in 2009. Or at the very least, it should plateau.
Considering there are not one, not two, but three superhero movies coming out this summer, plus two Pixar films and Star Trek, all of which are in 3D…well, I’ll believe it when I see it.
Still it’s nice to know that some data gatherer out there is on our side…whichever side that is.
