Four Ways to Improve the Exterior of Your Home

Posted on the 15 December 2015 by Mummyb @mummyb_kw

I often find myself writing about home decor, it's an aspect of blogging/life I love and I'm always dreaming up ways in which we can improve our own home. It's easy to think about what color to paint a wall, or where to hang that mirror or what cushion would complete that bedroom look. One area that often gets neglected is the exterior of a home.
The exterior of your home is the first thing you see when you get home, you want to make your home warm and inviting - especially at this time of year. So how exactly can you do this?

Tidy that garden

A front garden is probably somewhere you don't spend a lot of time, it's just somewhere you walk past to and from home. Just tidying up the garden, giving it a good weed can really do wonders. This is something we try and do regularly, our estate that we live on is kept so nice as we have gardeners who come regularly to do the communal areas. You feel you can't let your neighbours down with an untidy garden. No one wants to be that neighbour.

A lick of paint

Whether it be on a front door or even painting the entire house, paint doesn't last forever and will need re-doing every now and then. I love to see a brightly coloured door, I think it's a great way of adding a bit of your own personality to the house. When I went to Reykjavik a few years ago, one of the things I absolutely loved was they way the houses were all so individual and brightly coloured. It's something that definitely cheers you up on a dull day.

Improve windows

Something that isn't a quick fix, but is something that we all have to do over time. Finding the right windows for your home can be tricky, but there are a few options out there for you. Aluminium windows are absolutely brilliant if you're looking for a more energy efficient option, they're rated A+. They're also brilliant for security purposes, utilising shootbolts for enhanced security. Something else to consider is that these days you don't just have to have bog standard white windows. You can get really creative with your design and get some coloured window frames. If you have a more traditional home, timber alternative windows, maybe the way to go. These UPVC windows that look like timber are the perfect option for heritage properties who are also looking to improve their energy efficiency in their homes.

Adding the finishing touches

A cheap way of re-vamping the exterior of your home is to add a few decorative pieces. Whether it be a potted plant/tree, a seasonal wreath or a new house number/name plaque, it doesn't have to be expensive, but it can really change the look and feel to your home.
