Gaddhafi Killers Are Just As Evil As Him

Like everyone else that day I turned on the news to see that Gaddhafi had been caught and killed. I followed the story, read with horror as witness reports flashed across the screen. I watched in disbelief as he was dragged barely conscious through the streets, bloodied and beaten, begging for his life and pleading for mercy.

His pleas fell on deaf ears. His words made no difference.

He was shot in the head like a dog in the street. His dead, battered, blood soaked corpse was then paraded around until finally being thrown into a corner for days, where people would pay to see him dead.

It was clear. Gaddhafi was a monster.

In life he was a sadistic tyrant who was responsible for more deaths, tortures, brutality than anyone can hold him accountable for. He was cruel, hard, reviled and abhorrent in actions and words. The world was definitely better with him dead.

Everyone hoped that as his life ended Libya could raise from its oppressed knees and stand tall, no longer pushed to the brink by a mad man. Everyone celebrated freedom. But the world should have been sad.

You see the capture of Gaddhafi brought upon the Libyans a moment, where just for that time, the world’s eyes were upon them. His people. Eyes that watched him beg for his life. Holding our breaths, as second by second ticked by, we watched him stripped of his clothes, his dignity and his power. When people who had suffered at his hand or instruction had the chance to show him what a human being is capable of.

In the cold light of day they had the chance to show the monster the human traits he didn’t’ possess humility, grace and compassion. And instead they took that moment to honor him by acting just like him. They hurt him, hated him and showed him nothing but anger. Let him die frightened like most of his victims. All the things they hated him for poured into them and they couldn’t stop, suddenly bloody thirsty and wild.

The reality is that he deserved to die.

But it was a disgusting, degrading death where he had no human rights- if indeed he ever was human? But by killing him and parading him they showed the world that his revenge is a bitter pill to swallow. By acting as he would have done, they showed the world they are no better than him. And while he’s laughing in his grave now it’s put the world to shame. He was condemned for being a cruel heartless monster, just like his killers.
